Note
Twelve migrants died on Monday, October 19, in two separate incidents in the northeastern Aegean, the Hellenic Coast Guard said. Off Agrilia in southeastern Lesbos, a speedboat carrying migrants collided with a coast guard patrol vessel and overturned. Four men, a woman and an infant died, and eight people survived and were taken to hospital in Mytilene. Shipping Minister Vassilis Kikilias said preliminary evidence showed the speedboat's bow struck the patrol vessel, and the collision is under investigation.
About 3.7 nautical miles north of Samos, another speedboat that the coast guard said had crossed from Turkish waters at high speed overturned after a sharp manoeuvre. Five men and a woman died. In a release on Tuesday, October 20, the coast guard said its lifeboat rescued 15 men and a patrol vessel rescued one more, and that according to survivors three people are still missing. A 29-year-old Iranian national among the survivors was arrested as the suspected smuggler; a second suspected smuggler was arrested from the Lesbos boat.
A baby was on one of the boats. The minister says the answer is zero tolerance for smugglers. Off Samos, the search goes on for three more.
Why it matters
Both boats were running from Turkish waters at speed, and one hit the coast guard boat chasing it. The route keeps killing people.
