Common questions

What kind of news goes on this page?

Notes about armed conflict and serious tension between states, such as attacks, escalations, ceasefires and major diplomatic moves, each tied to a named source and a date.

Where do the numbers in these notes come from?

Each figure comes from the source named on that note, such as the United Nations or a national government, and the note links to it.

Why do casualty numbers change after a note is posted?

Early counts are often incomplete, so officials revise them as they confirm more, and each note shows the figure published when it was written.

Does Doom Signals predict where fighting will happen next?

No; the notes report what sources have said and explain why it matters, without forecasts.

What happens if a note gets something wrong?

The desk fixes it in the open and records the change on the public corrections page.
