NWS Guam, Super Typhoon Champi Advisory 28, Oct 21 ChST

Note

At 7 PM Chamorro Standard Time Wednesday, October 21, which was 5 AM EDT Wednesday, NWS Guam's Advisory 28 placed Super Typhoon Champi near 19.0 North, 128.4 East, about 1,150 miles west-northwest of Guam. Maximum sustained winds had decreased to 175 mph, down from a peak of 185 mph in Advisory 26 on Tuesday afternoon, and the storm was moving west-northwest at 15 mph. No watches or warnings are in effect. NWS Guam said this would be its last advisory on Champi.

NWS Guam expects a slight turn toward the northwest with a decrease in forward speed through Thursday, over open water, and forecasts Champi to weaken through Thursday. Typhoon force winds extend up to 100 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds up to 310 miles.

Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said on Wednesday afternoon, Taiwan time, that it may issue a sea typhoon warning late Wednesday night and possibly a land typhoon warning on Thursday afternoon. It expects Champi to move north off Taiwan's east coast on Friday, with its wind field possibly reaching land in northern and eastern Taiwan, and heavy rain in the north on Friday and Saturday.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center's Warning 28 placed the center near 18.7 North, 128.9 East at 0600 UTC with 1-minute sustained winds of 150 knots and a minimum pressure of 904 mb. Its forecast track brings Champi to about 105 knots near 23.9 North, 123.4 East by 0600 UTC Friday, east of Taiwan. That is a forecast track, not a warning.

The storm has crested. What is left of it is still enormous, and it is turning toward land.

Why it matters

Champi is leaving the waters NWS Guam covers and heading toward Taiwan. Taiwan's weather agency expects the storm's wind field to reach parts of northern and eastern Taiwan as it passes offshore on Friday, with heavy rain in the north. No land warning has been issued yet.
