Note

Update, 8:55 AM ET Oct 24: Taiwan's Central Weather Administration has cancelled its typhoon warning for Champi. In report No. 24, issued at 8:30 PM Taiwan time on Saturday, October 24, it said the storm had weakened over the past three hours, its storm circle had shrunk, and the threat to the waters off northern Taiwan had ended.

At 8 PM local time the agency placed the center at 27.8N 123.4E, about 360 km north northeast of Taipei, moving north northeast and turning northeast at 17 km/h, rising to 21 km/h. It now rates Champi a severe tropical storm, with a central pressure of 985 hPa, sustained winds near the center of 25 m/s, about 90 km/h, and gusts of 33 m/s, about 119 km/h.

The average radius of winds of 15 m/s or more is now 180 km, down from 320 km a day earlier. The agency expects further weakening and a shrinking storm circle, and forecasts the center at 31.0N 126.2E by 8 PM Sunday Taiwan time.

A day earlier, in report No. 17, the center sat about 50 km east of Yilan, and a public warning alert at 11:24 PM on Oct 23 told people near the center that destructive gusts were expected and to take shelter as soon as possible. In report No. 18-2 the agency said the terrain had made the track deflect and loop.

The storm has gone north. What it left behind on the ground has not yet been counted here.

Why it matters

A typhoon that slows or loops near a coast keeps its wind and rain over the same ground for longer. Champi's winds of 15 m/s or more reach about 320 km from its center on average, so the whole island sits inside it.
